Hydrating your skin means increasing its water content
Maintaining the right level of skin hydration ensures optimal skin health, and improves its appearance. To keep the skin hydrated, different strategies can be adopted, let's see them together.
The human body is made up of approximately 60% water, which is why it needs to stay hydrated constantly in order to function properly. Hydrating the skin of the body also means taking care of it: if we do not pay attention to the water content, in fact, the epidermis can take on a dull and unhealthy colour, it can appear rough, dry and chapped and, in the long run, we can witness the formation of more or less deep wrinkles.
Water therefore plays a fundamental role in the beauty and well-being of our skin.
The epidermis has its own natural hydration factor (NMF), a sort of protective patina that regulates the skin ecosystem, and which has the ability to retain the right level of humidity. The main task of water is to maintain skin elasticity , the first sign of dehydration is in fact that annoying sensation of "tight skin".
When the hydration level of the stratum corneum drops below 20%, the skin surface becomes dry and rough, its elasticity is noticeably reduced and a process of dryness, flaking and cracking is observed.
Among the main factors that can make skin dry are: pollution, diets poor in fruit, fresh vegetables and mineral salts, low temperatures, prolonged exposure to the sun, excessively stressful lifestyles, incorrect skin cleansing with products not suitable for your skin type.
In the dermis which is the innermost part of our skin, water reaches it thanks to blood circulation. Hydration starts from the inside, the water rises from the blood circulation into the dermis and from there to the stratum corneum
This is why often people who drink little or who have bad eating habits do not find benefit from applying the cream alone and continue to have very dry skin. It is necessary to combine nutrition with cosmetic treatments, in fact together they manage to create a beautiful synergy, effective for having elastic, luminous... and healthy skin!
The problem, however, is not only ensuring the water supply, as, over time, the accumulated water deposit tends to evaporate again, it is therefore necessary to provide water to the skin, but also and above all to try to retain it at the its interior.
Whatever your skin type, dry, oily or sensitive, you should never forget hydration in your daily routine.
On a general level, there are two main hydration strategies:
- regulate skin lipid content;
- regulate skin water content.
In this regard, substances can be used:
- emollients: they prevent the loss of water with a filming and/or occlusive effect;
- humectants: they capture water and retain it in the skin.
The "moisturizing" action of cosmetics is in fact indirect, as it is obtained substantially by reducing skin loss of water.
It is often thought that moisturizers "add water to the skin", in reality in most cases they work by reducing the evaporation of water from the skin
